The magic of traditional German Christmas Markets is casting more visitors under its spell every year.

Historic Christmas Markets, held in cities, towns and villages throughout many countries in the world, are becoming increasingly more popular, due, no doubt, to the enchanting Festive Season atmosphere they evoke. The Christmas Fairs and Christmas Markets of Germany are unique. If you're tired of commercialism taking over this holiday period and would like to get right away for a real traditional and romantic Christmas Market you might want to consider heading to Germany where Christmas gifts are not mass-produced but craftwork of real quality.

ERIC NEUBAUER’S DIE DORFMUSIKANTEN CELEBRATING 45 YEARS

OF PLAYING THE MOST AUTHENTIC BAVARIAN MUSIC IN THE REGION

* Neubauer keeping the old world music traditions alive

MILFORD, MI – In the mid 60’s Eric Neubauer was studying clarinet with Emil Moro at the Detroit Wayne Music studio in Detroit. It was there that he met his wife Laura, who plays clarinet and saxophone. They both studied with Moro and later toured California as students with the Wayne State University Symphonic Band. In 1968 the two of them formed Eric Neubauer’s Die Dorfmusikanten - German for “Town Band”.

2013 marks the 45th anniversary of the band and Neubauer is busier than ever keeping the traditional Bavarian/Czech-style music alive. The band was originally formed in Harper Woods and soon became a crowd favorite at German/Bavarian picnics and festivals throughout Southeast, Michigan, Ohio, Windsor, and Toronto. The group has anywhere from 6-10 pieces and sometimes a singer.

Other styles of music the band plays this are Austrian, Czech, Big Band and others. Neubauer, who plays Eb clarinet, Bb Clarinet, bass clarinet, alto, tenor and baritone sax, and piano, works tirelessly doing arrangements for the band or uses authentic versions from Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

“We’ve been together for so long because we all enjoy the happy, joyous sound and the feeling of great tradition within the music,” says Neubauer. “There’s not too many bands left that pay the traditional-style music like we do. As each generation finds its preferred sound, the established forms suffer in appeal, but that’s the same with all popular music. There are a few people around the world trying to preserve great music of the past, but most musicians need to get on and succeed at something to keep playing and thus, are more concerned with doing something “new”.

Die Dorfmusikanten is very popular at festivals and clubs, and recently played to their biggest audiences at the Ann Arbor German Park, which usually has between 2,500 and 4000 attendees per event. The group is the premiere group at Bavarian Park getting three out of four events this year. They also play the occasional wedding and is the premier band for the annual Oktoberfest at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham.

“I can’t tell you how many times people come up to me that are from the old country and tell us how much our music reminds them of when they were a kid at dance halls with their parents,” says Neubauer. “Many people ask me if this is our primary employment. For me it is, but most of the members have day jobs, though a couple are/were involved with music teaching as regular employment. My members include several of the finest teachers in the metro area. The thing about our style of music is, it’s hard not to tap your toes or dance to it. We play music that people haven’t heard or played in decades.”

“We can tailor a group of any size to fit any occasion, from to twelve performers. Usually the bigger orchestras are for the beer-hall and Oktoberfest type festivals. But sometimes we get calls for just a four or five piece band to perform at local functions. I personally like the full sound of at least ten performers because it is more authentic and the sound is just awesome.”
